Supporting birth connections

Working with birth family

At FIT we recognise that there are times when any parent would be tested and it is not their intention to cause harm, but, sadly, there are also individuals who set out to deliberately harm children. We do not always know why children come to harm, but whatever the reason, we work from a basis that all parents should be treated with respect and we recognise, no matter what has happened, often birth parents will continue hold importance for their children.

Working Together

Supporting Family Connections

We work alongside foster parents and birth families to promote positive relationships that help children feel safe, supported and connected.

Our Approach

Working together

We support collaboration between foster parents and birth families to ensure children feel safe, supported and connected.

Listen & Understand

We take time to understand the child’s needs, family background and the plan for the child so we can advise and support our foster parents to help children maintain safe and meaningful relationships.

Supporting family connections

We understand that children often miss their families and it is important for them to still see friends and family members who are important to them. We also uphold the rights of birth parents to remain involved in their child's life and to be consulted about significant decisions affecting their child.

Working in partnership

We work with professionals to ensure that all decisions and any contact is in the child's best interests and managed in a way that supports the child's emotional wellbeing.

Supporting families together

Working positively with birth parents and families helps children feel secure, understood and supported. Our team works alongside foster parents and families to encourage respectful communication and relationships that prioritise the child’s wellbeing.
