Promoting Welsh culture

Based in Wales, we are proud to promote and provide opportunities for children to experience and engage in Welsh culture. Where children, young people, or foster parents prefer to communicate in Welsh, we can access translation services to ensure they feel understood and included. We can also provide policies and documents in Welsh on request, ensuring everyone is informed in the language that feels most comfortable to them.

Supporting diversity

We promote the benefits of cultural diversity, encouraging children to explore their origins and feel proud of who they are. Where possible, we match children with foster families according to their ethnic and cultural origins. However, where this is not possible we ensure children are supported to remain connected to their heritage, helping them celebrate important traditions, festivals, and religious practices. We also promote opportunities for children to learn and communicate in their first language, strengthening their identity and sense of belonging.

Identity & inclusion

We recognise the changing and evolving needs of children and young people who become looked after. At FIT we actively promote respect and inclusion when caring for children with different needs. This includes recognising gender, sexuality, ethnicity, language, religion, culture, disability, and neurodiversity. We encourage children to value their identity and build the confidence and resilience to positively address and overcome discrimination or prejudice.

Where we work

Our office is registered in Cardiff, but we cover much of South Wales, offering direct face to face and remote support. We offer a flexible service, ensuring support during usual 9am-5pm office hours, but also able to provide visits and telephone support outside those hours as needed. We work to develop connections between foster parents locally to support one another. We draw on the skills of more experienced foster parents to support those who are new to fostering.

Data protection

FIT takes the confidentiality of children and foster families very seriously. To support this we have developed a secure web-based system where foster parents can access information and share updates safely in line with data protection legislation. All of our policies, procedures and guidance are available through our website. We are committed to service improvement, reviewing our work, conducting regular audits and seeking feedback from children, young people, foster parents, their families and professionals from partner agencies.
